Opposite Joe’s ice cream…Something much creamier is brewing…
Rob Turner moved to Swansea to run the University Counselling Service in 2000 and took early retirement in 2011, that’s when he started a project that came from a simple conversation with a pub quiz team member who, with his wife, bought the Pilot Inn in Mumbles where he set up Mumbles Brewery armed only with a 2.5 bbl kit and brewing twice per week.
Capital funding was supported by assembly funding and 50% sold to the Pilot, the rest to other pubs. Rob Started creating conditioned mini casks and at the time of separation from The Pilot in June, 2014 bottling was done at Tomos Watkins in 10 bbl kits and casks. This quickly shifted into contract brewing until he moved into Llansamlet where Rob has been brewing from since September 2015. Mumbles primarily sell bottles locally to most pubs in the Swansea area and casks sold from Llanelli to Bristol.
Recently, Mumbles Brewery have been trading the British breweries for the American ‘liquor’ stores, embarking on a 19 day trip in California and Arizona to search out some of the best craft beers in the West; “It was a tough job, but someone had to do it” said Rob Turner on his return.
By seeking out more exotic beers from a country which has even brewed ‘Pizza Beer’ in the past, Mumbles Brewery goes beyond its namesake, introducing Wales to a whole new era of Craft beer.
This has led other pioneers of the scene, such as James ‘J’ Starkey of Hopcraft Brewing and The Gravity Station to plan their own trips to the states to get into, well, some states… Beyond getting Star Spangled Hammered, James will be setting up links in cities like New York, which has previously hosted great Welsh beer drinkers such as Swansea’s own son, Dylan Thomas.
